The extremely well carved eyeholes have a perfect round and smooth shape that highlight the rare transparent right glass eye; unfortunately the left eye is missing. The ears have a nice and round finishing that complete the smooth carving made for this rare yet beautiful mask.  The skin has a rare leather-like feel with a soft edge. Notice the scratches on skin and the fissure in the left upper section of the mask caused during the many “Bailes Tradicionales” where the piece was used. Monkeys are present in almost every Ceremonial Dance; they act as buffoons, they give the relief to the audience during the long lasting ceremonies; and they have the important roll of collecting food, liquor or money for the Religious Brotherhood that sponsors the event. The age of the mask can be determined by the many different layers of paint and the incredible backside patina that tells the many adventures that the mask has overcome. The mask has a rare “M” branding from the “Marroquín” Morería made to recognize the mask after being rented to the dancers.
